St. simple,3-8in..nearly smooth: rootstock horizontal, 3-4 times the st. in diam.: Lvs. of involucre petioled, 3-5-parted; basal Lvs. appearing after the fl.-st., 5-parted, divisions wedge-shaped, toothed: fls. white or purplish, solitary, 1 in. across: achenes pubescent; styles hooked. Apr., May. Eu. and Siberia. Gn. 63, p. 244 (as A. intermedia).—Three or more horticultural varieties. Var. alba, Hort. (var. flore-plena, Hort.). Fis. larger, pure white, and abundant. Intro. 1883.
