Aphelandra fascinator, Lind. & André. Habit stiff and erect, with fls. opening in succession over a period of some 4-6 weeks: st. terete, green, glabrous: Lvs. elliptic, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, entire, shortly petiolate, 6-9 in. long, upper side dark green with narrow band of silvery white along midrib and principal veins, lower side dull wine-red with veins of a darker shade: infl. an erect unbranched terminal spike up to 6 in. long; bracts ovate or elliptic, basal ones an inch long, tapering upwards to ½ in. long, covered with short pilose hairs; sepals ⅓ in. long, lanceolate, glandular, green; corolla bright vermilion-scarlet, 1½ in. diam. with large and prominent front lobe; tube slender. 1½ in. long. B.M. 8398. I.H. 21:164.—A beautiful and striking species, well worth growing for its handsome foliage apart from its beautiful fls. It should be kept rather on the dry side as soon as the fls. appear, otherwise the plant is likely to lose all its roots.<br />
