Quercus imbricaria, Michx. Shingle Oak. Tree, to 60, rarely to 100 ft., with slender and somewhat pendulous branches, of pyramidal habit in its youth, round-topped when old: lvs. oblong or oblong-lanceolate, dark green and glabrous above, grayish tomentulose beneath, 3-7 in. long:fr. short-stalked; acorn subglobose, 1/2in. long, embraced one-third to one-half by the turbinate cup. Pa. to Ga., west to Neb. and Ark. S.S. 8:432. A.G. 17:195. Mn. 6:91.—Beautiful oak of symmetrical habit with handsome glossy foliage, turning russet-red in fall. There are hybrids of this species; with Q. marilandica, Q. velutina, Q. rubra, and Q.palustris, of which the last is in the trade as Q. palustri-imbricaria, Engelm.: it has oblong-lanceolate lvs. entire or coarsely toothed, with bristly teeth, soon glabrous, 4-6 in. long: cup turbinate.Subgenus Lepidobalanus. White Oaks.&lt;br /&gt;
