Quercus prinoides, Willd. (Q. Chincapin, Pursh. Q. Prinus var. <br />
Chincapin, Michx.). Chincapin Oak. Spreading shrub, with slender sts., <br />
usually not over 6 ft. high, rarely to 15 ft.: lvs. rather <br />
short-petioled, cuneate at the base, ovate-oblong or oblong, with 4—8 <br />
sometimes obtusish teeth on each side, bright green above, grayish <br />
tomentulose beneath, 2 1/2-5 in. long: fr. sessile, acorn oval, about <br />
1/2in. long, embraced one-half by the cup. Maine to Ala., west to Minn. <br />
and Texas. S.S. 8:378. Em. 1:158.—Pretty shrub for covering dry and <br />
rocky ridges. In trade sometimes under the misleading name of Q. <br />
humilis, for which see suppl. list.<br />
