Azalea obtusa, Lindl.). Low, much-branched shrub: lvs. persistent, <br />
obovate, rounded and mucronulate at the apex, dark green and lustrous <br />
above, strigose on the midrib beneath, 1/2-1 1/2 in. long: fls. 2-3; <br />
sepals ovate, small, ciliate; corolla funnelform, orange-red or pink, <br />
1-1 1/2 in. across; stamens 5; anthers yellow. May. Japan. B.R. 32:37. <br />

11:289. A.F. 12:33; 20:751. F.E. 9:573. J.F. 4:329. This variety, of <br />
which the wild parent plant is unknown, seems to have some relations to <br />
R. Simsii and may be of hybrid origin. It flowers early and very <br />
abundantly; hardy north to N. Y. There are some forms and crosses of <br />
this variety of which the following may be named: album, with white <br />
fls. M.D.G. 1903:476; Cald-wellii, with larger purple fls. (Geert, Ic. <br />
Az. 18); G. 32:21; Marvel, lilac-carmine, double (F.M. 11; 14); <br />
Princess Maud, rosy magenta (R.H. 1886:516); Mrs. Carmichael, <br />
crimson-magenta; Princess Beatrice, bright mauve; Prime Minister, soft <br />
pink; Miss Buist, pure white; Hexe (Firefly), deep crimson. In Japanese <br />
gardens a large number of named varieties of R. obtusum, varying in <br />
shades from white to deep crimson, are grown; one of the best known of <br />
them is Hinodigiri, with brilliant crimson fls.<br />
