Rollinia pittieri, Safford. A tree resembling R. deliciosa, but <br />
with lvs. more abruptly acuminate and glaucous beneath, the vegetative <br />
ones 6-8 in. long and 3-3 2/5 in. broad, midrib and primary nerves <br />
(16-20 on each side) reddish brown beneath: lvs. on flowering branches <br />
smaller (with 10-12 primary nerves): peduncles often in clusters of 3 <br />
or 4, graduated in length, the longest 1 2/5 in. long, rufous, <br />
minutely puberulent, never hairy like those of R. deliciosa, <br />
bracteolate near the middle: corolla-wings 3/5-4/5in. long, falcate, <br />
horizontally extended and decurved, rounded at extremity, and narrowed <br />
at the base, very finely puberulent, appearing under the lens as <br />
though composed of olive-gray felt: fr. not observed.—A beautiful <br />
species with elliptical or obovate lvs. remarkable for the pale color <br />
of the lower surface and the sharply outlined lateral nerves. These <br />
correspond with the description of R. rufinerva, Triana and Planch., <br />
but the corolla-wings are decurved, not "divergent ascending," as in <br />
that species. The type, in the U. S. National Herbarium, was collected <br />
near Puerto Obaldia, Panama, by Henry Pittier (No. 4358), in whose <br />
honor the species is named.<br />
