Scheelea (after Scheele, distinguished German chemist). Palmaceae. Pinnate palms from Trop. S. Amer. They are spineless, tall or dwarf: lf.-segms. arranged in regular series or grouped, linear, in young plants unequally and obtusely 2-cut at the apex: fls. yellowish, dioecious or monoecious, the males very numerous in the upper part of the branches, the females few or solitary in the lower part and sometimes peduncled; petals of the males long-club-shaped or cylindrical; stamens 6, shorter than the petals: fr. 1-3-seeded.— About 10 species. Almost unknown in Amer. Cult. in hot moist house. Prop. by rarely obtainable imported seeds. Considered by some the same as Cocos butyracea. The following species has never been described as a Scheelea and it is only by inference on Karsten's part that it can be placed there. S. butyracea, Karst. This species was once cult. in S. Calif. Franceschi remarks that it comes from Venezuela and is a magnificent palm with the habit of attalea. H. A. Siebrecht states that it is rare in cult. and that it is more interesting than beautiful. On account of its large st.-base or crown, it requires so large a pot or tub for the size of the plant that it does not make a very ornamental subject.<br />
