Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture

Gillenia (dedicated to an obscure German botanist or physician of the seventeenth century, A. Gille or Gillemus). Syn. Porteranthus. Rosaceae. Excellent graceful plants for the mixed border, rockeries, or other hardy gardens.

Erect, perennial herbs, 2-4 ft. high, with nearly sessile, 3-foliate, or 3-parted, stipulate lvs.: fls. white or pinkish, loosely panicled, perfect, perigynous; cup- shaped receptacle narrow, somewhat contracted at the mouth, 5-toothed; petals strap-shaped, unequal, 4-8 lines long; stamens 10-20, very short; pistils 5, superior, lightly coherent, later distinct, pubescent: fr. consisting of 5 2-4-seeded follicles.—-Two species. They are hardy and of easy cult, in any good soil. Prop, by seeds or division.
