Your hydrangea should make it through the winter if you are in USDA Zone 6 or above. A deep mulch over the plant might give it extra protection, or if you are in a lower zone you can dig it up and bring it indoors for the winter. You can divide the plant into two in the late fall or early spring if you don't want to disrupt it too much, though other times of the year can work as well.
