Prunus lyonii, Sarg. (Laurocerasus Lyonii, Eastw. Prunus occidentalis, Lyon, not Swartz. P. ilicifolia var. ocddentalis, Brandeg. P. integrifolia, Sarg., not Walp. P. ilicifolia var. integrifolia, Sudw.). Islands Cherry. Lvs. longer and more acuminate, usually entire: fr. larger. Islands off the coast of S. Calif. (Santa Cruz and Santa Catalina). S.S. 4:163.—Considered to be more desirable as a garden-plant than No. 81. It grows rapidly under cult., making a compact very dark green crown. Useful also in pots and tubs. P. occidentalis, Swartz, a different plant, grows from Cuba to Trinidad. It is not in the trade. Grisebach describes it as a high tree: lvs. oblong or ovate-oblong, rounded at the base, bluntish, with 2 glandular spots at the base beneath: racemes lateral, puberulous or glabrous: fr. ovoid, slightly apiculate, nearly 1 in. long, purple. The fr. is said to be "of very fine flavor."
