Viburnum lantana, Linn. Wayfaring Tree. Upright shrub or sometimes small tree, attaining 20 ft.: young branches scurfy-pubescent: lvs. ovate or oblong-ovate, usually cordate at base, acute or obtuse, sparingly stellate-pubescent and wrinkled above, tomentose beneath, denticulate, 2-4 in. long: fls. white: cymes dense, 2-3 in. broad, with usually 7 rays: fr. ovoid-oblong, bright red, changing to almost black. May, June. Eu., W. Asia. A.G. 18:453 and F.E. 9:593 (as V. lantanoides). H.W. 3, p. 131. Gn. 61, p. 324.—Hardy shrub, especially for drier situations and limestone soil. Var. rugosum, Hort.
